A college kid who likes to sing Russian anthems accompanied by his accordion. An incomprehensible Scotsman who has been installing art in Montreal. A local contractor who prospects for gold and welds custom library ladders. A vagabond fiddle player who looks like a newsie and collects rare firearms. Just a few of the guys here at the Wagon Box who joined me in the icy waters of Spring Creek this morning before breakfast under the ponderosas.
The Bighorn mountains are leafing into summer and here you’ll want to go for a stroll and see our baby goats, the trail ride horses, the ducklings skimming along the creek (trout below them), deer and turkey, and our array of retrofitted vintage campers and busses, tipis, wall tents as well as our fancier cabins. Loop back to the restaurant, with an espresso bar, tavern and a library, and instruments hanging on the wall (behind the grand piano). There you can often hear a crazy story, have a fierce but good faith argument, or enjoy an interesting conversation over a good meal, beside a crackling fire or in the setting summer sun.
“The Box,” is more than cozy lodging, a good place to dine, a kitchen stocked with hearty food (we fry in tallow), cold beverages and good conversation: the essentials. It offers more to those who want it, as evinced by its growing events schedule and the international murmur of approval. It’s becoming a spot on the radar of authors, founders, technologists, philosophers, tinkerers, and adventurers who have been there or simply plan to go some day.
The Wagon Box emerged out of a growing sense of “I wish there were a place.” We were tired of wishing. We bought a restaurant and resort (Some say it may be the Last Resort). We’ve had some great nights, some great people passing through, and a great deal more looking to get here as soon as the wind carries them in. Many of you, both folks who’ve stopped by and others who have yet to take that plunge, have expressed a desire to get involved with the Wagon Box project in whatever way you can.
We are offering a membership for those who see value in what we’re building and want to be a part of it. It’s a way of joining the project and staking an early claim in a nascent cultural node. Become a Wagoneer. You’ll get two days of food and lodging at the Wagon Box, first access to events, invitation to a private Discord server, a t-shirt and, well, what else do you want?
If you had the time of your life at the Box and want to stay connected, if you’ve just heard about us and the project strikes a chord, apply today and help build a place we’ve all wished for.
See you at the Box,
Paul McNiel
